Week 1 Research

1. What shutter type is found in almost all small format DSLR cameras? (your camera)
   [focal-plane shutter]
   [Canon 5D MK II - Vertical-travel, mechanical, Electronically-controlled, focal-plane shutter.]

2. What does the term flash synchronisation mean?
It refers to the speed of the shutter at which the entire sensor/film can be illuminated by the flash pulse. If the camera shutter speed is set above the synch speed the shutter will block the flash pulse either partially or completely depending on the shutter speed. Some camera/flash combinations support high speed flash sync. Instead of using a single flash pulse, the flash unit sends out very fast repeated pulses as the shutter curtain slit travels across the sensor. The trade off of using high speed flash sync is the greatly reduced effective flash power.  http://dptnt.com/2007/10/flash-sync-speed/

3. What is the flash synchronisation speed for your camera?
When an EX-series Speedlite (such as the 580EX II and 430EXII) settable by the camera is attached, you can use the camera's menu screen to set the Speedlite's flash function setting and Custom Functions.
The camera can sync with non-Canon compact flash units at 1/200 sec. and slower speeds. With large studio flash units, since the flash duration is longer , set the sync speed within 1/60 sec to 1/30 sec. (Canon EOS 5d Mark II Instruction Manual pp. 104-105)

4. What is the typical colour temperature (in Kelvins) of an electronic flash discharge?
5,500-6,000 K  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature#Digital_photography
5,000 Typical daylight: electronic flash http://www.aeimages.com/learn/color-correction.html
5,400-6,000 http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/white-balance/wb-concept.html
The Canon flash Insturction Manual and Canon site does not provide the colour temperature but only says "Flash color temperature information transmitted to camera when flash is fired."

5. What is the typical flash discharge duration of a contemporary portable flash unit?
Canon Speedlite 580EX II is Normal flash: 1.2 ms or shorter, Qucik Flash: 2.3 ms or shorter. [Instruction Manual]
